SB57

Revise county canvassing processes

Complete·5/8/25

Montana SB57 revises county canvassing processes to include investigations of vote count discrepancies and recounts.

Montana SB57 revises county canvassing processes by requiring a board of county canvassers to compare the number of votes cast to the number of electors and persons who voted. The board must investigate discrepancies or errors in vote counts. A recount is required if a candidate or ballot issue is decided by a margin not exceeding 1/4 of 1% of the total votes cast and a petition is filed within 5 days after the official canvass. The bill also mandates that the canvass be public and nonessentials be disregarded.
