Complete·5/13/25

Montana HB602 mandates written notice to school boards about teacher layoffs due to funding shortages.

Montana HB602 requires school districts to notify their board of trustees in writing when they lay off teachers due to insufficient funding. The notice must come from the district superintendent or the principal if there is no superintendent. The board must then include this notice on the agenda for the next school board meeting and allow public comment. This requirement does not apply to the nonrenewal of a specific teacher's contract. Effective July 1, 2025.
