Introduced·1/7/26
Introduced Text

Missouri HJR125 proposes an amendment to the state constitution to allow local political subdivisions to increase sales tax rates or change tax.

Missouri HJR125 seeks to amend the state constitution to enable political subdivisions to increase sales tax rates or alter tax purposes, subject to voter approval. Starting in 2027, local governments can propose higher sales tax rates or new purposes without legislative authorization, provided a majority of voters approve the changes. The amendment also prohibits local governments from increasing taxes beyond authorized levels without voter consent. The proposed changes would be put to voters in a general election.
