HB1799

Authorizes taxpayers to submit petitions to reduce local tax rate levies

Introduced·1/7/26
Introduced Text

HB 1799 allows Missouri taxpayers to petition for a reduction in their local property tax rates.

HB 1799, the Taxation Oversight and Reduction Act, enables Missouri taxpayers to petition their local election authority to reduce their political subdivision's combined property tax rate. Taxpayers must submit a petition with signatures from at least five percent of registered voters in the subdivision. The local election authority verifies the signatures and, if valid, places the question on the ballot. If a majority of voters approve, the tax rate is reduced. The bill sets a fee for signature verification and limits the frequency and scope of tax rate reductions.
