Increases civil penalties for texting while driving in Mississippi.

Mississippi SB2801 amends Section 63-33-1 of the Mississippi Code to increase civil penalties for writing, sending, or reading a text message and accessing social networking sites using a hand-held mobile telephone while driving. The fine for a violation outside of school or construction zones is increased to $250, and to $500 if the violation results in a crash. The Department of Public Safety will record details of citations, including age, race, and crash involvement. The law takes effect July 1, 2026.
