Mississippi SB2256 allows county boards of supervisors to maintain and repair abandoned cemeteries within their jurisdiction.

Mississippi SB2256 amends the Mississippi Code to authorize county boards of supervisors to maintain and repair abandoned public or private nonprofit cemeteries within their jurisdiction. This includes cemeteries within municipal boundaries. The boards can use available county funds for maintenance and may bill municipalities for reimbursement if the cemetery is within their limits. The bill also allows boards to enlarge public cemeteries and accept title to neglected cemeteries that are detrimental to public health and welfare. The act takes effect from July 1, 2026.
