Mississippi HB766 amends the Mississippi Code to increase the number of full-time assistant public defenders in the Seventh Circuit Court District and Capitol Complex Improvement District Inferior Court. These assistants will receive office space, equipment, two investigators, two legal secretaries, and expenses at least equal to those of the district attorney, subject to available funds. The bill also updates provisions on the appointment of public defenders and assistant public defenders, their compensation, and office space and expenses. The changes are set to take effect from July 1, 2026.
