Establishes a process for two or more municipalities in counties with seven or more municipalities to create a joint municipal police department.
The Joint Municipal Law Enforcement Act allows two or more municipalities in counties with seven or more municipalities to establish a joint police department if it is deemed beneficial. The governing authorities of participating municipalities must adopt a resolution to create the joint department. The joint department will be governed by a board composed of the mayors of the participating municipalities and the county sheriff. The board will have the authority to hire a police commissioner, set the budget, purchase equipment, and establish rules.
