Increases penalties for violating school bus safety laws in Mississippi.
Mississippi HB530 amends Section 63-3-615 of the Mississippi Code to increase penalties for drivers who violate school bus safety laws. Drivers who overtake a stopped school bus with flashing red lights or a hand-operated stop sign extended must stop at least ten feet away. A first conviction results in a fine of $1,000 to $2,000 and/or imprisonment for up to one year. A second or subsequent offense within five years is a misdemeanor, punishable by a fine of $2,000 to $3,000 and/or imprisonment for up to one year, and a one-year driver's license suspension. The law takes effect July 1, 2026.
