Mississippi HB291 changes texting while driving from a civil to a traffic violation and increases the penalty to $100.

Mississippi HB291 amends Section 63-33-1 of the Mississippi Code of 1972 to prohibit drivers from holding or supporting a hand-held mobile telephone while writing, sending, or reading a text message. It also bans accessing, reading, or posting to a social networking site using a hand-held mobile telephone while driving. A violation of this section is now a traffic violation, punishable by a fine of One Hundred Dollars ($100.00).
