The Joint Municipal Law Enforcement Act allows two or more municipalities in a county with seven or more municipalities to establish a joint police department. The board governing the joint department includes the mayor from each municipality and the county sheriff. The board has the authority to make contracts, adopt bylaws, and set the budget. Participating municipalities fund the joint department based on population, with the larger municipality contributing more. The board also has the power to acquire, sell, and lease property. The act takes effect following July 1, 2026.
