Mississippi HB228 mandates that unemployed recipients of benefits under the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) or the Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF) program must take the Test of Adult Basic Education (TABE). If a recipient scores below the 12th grade level in any category of the TABE, they must enroll in a program of study at a community college to improve their proficiency and retake the TABE. This process repeats until the recipient achieves a score at or above the 12th grade level in each category. The act is set to take effect from July 1, 2026.
