Mississippi HB1164 revises the delineation of classes of victims triggering an enhanced penalty for a hate crime. The bill specifies that penalties for felonies or misdemeanors can be enhanced if the crime was committed due to the victim's actual or perceived race, color, ancestry, ethnicity, religion, disability, sexual orientation, gender identity, national origin, or gender. Additionally, it includes victims perceived as law enforcement officers, firefighters, or emergency medical technicians. The enhanced penalty can include up to twice the authorized term of imprisonment or fine.
