Minnesota SF97 amends exemption requirements for American Indian mascots in public schools.
Minnesota SF97 amends the exemption requirements for American Indian mascots in public schools. Public schools can request an exemption by submitting a written request to all 11 federally recognized Tribal Nations in Minnesota and the Tribal Nations Education Committee by September 1, 2023. The exemption is denied if any Tribal Nation or the committee opposes it by December 15, 2023. Schools with denied requests must comply with the prohibition by September 1, 2026. Schools are exempt if the local American Indian Tribe does not object or if no such Tribe exists in the county.
