Motorcycles can only split or filter lanes if both drivers consent and the vehicles fit safely within the lane. Motorcycles cannot split or filter lanes between moving or stationary vehicles, except under specific conditions. Motorcycles can overtake and pass other vehicles in the same lane if operated at 25 mph or less and no more than 15 mph over the speed of traffic. Exceptions apply at roundabouts, school zones, and freeway on-ramps without control devices. The changes take effect July 1, 2025.
