Forest Lake authorized to impose a local sales tax to fund a new public works facility.
The bill authorizes the city of Forest Lake to impose a local sales tax of up to one-half of one percent, in addition to any other local sales and use taxes. The tax revenue will be used to cover the costs of collecting and administering the tax, and to finance up to $50 million, plus associated bonding costs, for the construction of a new public works facility. The city can issue bonds to pay for the project, which are not subject to any debt limitation. The tax may expire after 20 years or earlier if the city council determines the tax revenue is sufficient to cover the project costs.
