Michigan SB0334 mandates training for law enforcement officers on de-escalation techniques, implicit bias, and behavioral health.

Michigan SB0334 amends the law enforcement licensing act to require training for officers on de-escalation techniques, implicit bias, and behavioral health. The commission on law enforcement standards must identify training gaps and develop curriculum standards. New officers must complete training by July 1, 2026, and ongoing officers by July 1, 2027. Officers must complete 12 hours of continuing education every two years starting July 1, 2028. The commission will create a model policy for law enforcement agencies to adopt, emphasizing the use of de-escalation techniques.
