Michigan SB0296 amends the Public Health Code to prohibit hospitals from requiring registered professional nurses to work more than their scheduled hours, on-call hours, or voluntary overtime hours. Exceptions include declared states of emergency, mass casualty incidents, and specific conditions such as unexpected absences of relieving nurses. Hospitals must provide nurses with 8 consecutive hours off after 12 consecutive hours of work. Nurses cannot be penalized for refusing to work overtime. Hospitals must post notices and inform nurses about filing complaints.
