Michigan SB0227 prohibits the purchase of soda with SNAP benefits by requesting a USDA waiver.

Michigan SB0227 amends the state's human services law to request a waiver from the USDA to prohibit the purchase of soda with SNAP benefits. If the waiver is granted, soda will be excluded from eligible foods under federal regulations. The state will continue to request the waiver annually if it is not initially granted. Soda is defined as any nonalcoholic beverage with natural or artificial sweeteners, excluding those with milk, or over 50% vegetable or fruit juice.
