SB0033

Probate: patient advocates; withholding life-sustaining treatment for a patient who is pregnant; allow. Amends secs. 5507 & 5509 of 1998 PA 386 (MCL 700.5507 & 700.5509).

Chamber Passed·4/17/25

Allows patient advocates to make decisions about life-sustaining treatment for pregnant patients.

This bill amends Michigan's probate code to allow patient advocates to make decisions about withholding or withdrawing life-sustaining treatment for pregnant patients. Previously, patient advocates could not make such decisions if they would result in the pregnant patient's death. The bill also outlines the powers, rights, responsibilities, and limitations of patient advocates, including that they cannot receive compensation but may be reimbursed for expenses. Patient advocates must act in accordance with the patient's best interests and known desires.
