SB0022

Housing: landlord and tenants; return of security deposit by electronic transfer; allow. Amends sec. 9 of 1972 PA 348 (MCL 554.609).

Chamber Passed·7/3/26

Allows landlords to return security deposits to tenants via electronic transfer.

This bill amends Michigan's landlord-tenant law to allow landlords to return security deposits to tenants through electronic transfer, such as direct deposit or transfer to a bank or payment account. Previously, landlords had to return the deposit via check or money order. The notice of damages must still include an itemized list of claimed damages and a warning that tenants must respond within 7 days or forfeit the claimed amount.
