Michigan HB5580 prohibits insurers from denying, canceling, or increasing premiums for residential property liability insurance based on dog breed.

Michigan HB5580 amends the Michigan Insurance Code to prohibit insurers from denying, canceling, or increasing premiums for residential property liability insurance based on the breed or mixture of breeds of a dog residing at the insured property. Insurers may still refuse to issue or renew a policy or increase rates based on sound underwriting and actuarial principles unrelated to the dog's breed. The amendment takes effect January 1, 2027, and applies to policies issued or renewed after that date.
