Michigan HB5170 allows tenants in metered rental units to request their landlord to transfer the water bill to their name.

Michigan HB5170 amends the existing landlord-tenant law to allow tenants in metered or sub-metered rental units to request their landlord to transfer the water bill to their name. The landlord must approve the request and complete the transfer within 120 days. The landlord cannot discriminate or retaliate against the tenant for making the request. The bill also allows tenants to bring a civil action against the landlord for violations, and the attorney general can seek relief for violations.
