Michigan HB4865 amends the Safe Drinking Water and Toxic Enforcement Act of 1986 to mandate testing of baby foods for heavy metals like arsenic, cadmium, lead, and mercury. Starting January 1, 2026, food processors must test each lot of baby food for these toxic elements at a proficient laboratory. The results must be made available to the Michigan Department of Agriculture and Rural Development upon request. If a lot exceeds the standards for toxic elements, the food processor must either dispose of the product or use it for animal feed.
