Massachusetts S2853 mandates real-time reporting of temperature and radiation release from dry casks storing spent nuclear fuel.
Massachusetts S2853 requires the owner and operator of nuclear power plants to continuously report to the Department of Public Health the temperature and the rate of helium and radiation release from each dry cask storing spent nuclear fuel. The Department of Public Health, in consultation with the Office of the Attorney General, will then create rules and regulations to implement this reporting. This bill aims to prevent, mitigate, or alleviate impacts on the resources of the commonwealth and to the health of its citizens from radiation emitted by spent nuclear fuel.
