Massachusetts S1861 authorizes independent retirement systems to divest from fossil fuel companies. These systems can invest in index funds or other vehicles excluding fossil fuel companies, following the procurement process. Fossil fuel companies are defined by Global Industry Classification Standard codes in coal, integrated oil and gas, or oil and gas exploration and production sectors. The act takes effect upon passage.
