S.1662

Requiring seat belts on school buses

Introduced·hearing on 6/8/26
Introduced Text

Massachusetts S1662 mandates seat belts on all school buses by July 1, 2028.

Massachusetts S1662 amends the state's general laws to require all school buses to be equipped with seat belts for each seating accommodation. This applies to buses transporting students to or from public, vocational, private, or parochial schools. Cities and towns may enact local ordinances to require seat belts earlier than the state mandate. The act also protects school bus operators, schools, and school districts from liability for damages due to the failure to install seat belts. The changes will take effect on July 1, 2028.
