Massachusetts S1655 amends Chapter 148 of the General Laws to require buildings with four or more dwelling units, including lodging houses and apartments, to be equipped with an approved system of automatic sprinklers. The head of the fire department can permit alternative fire suppression systems if adequate water supply is unavailable. Owners of buildings with approved and properly maintained installations may be eligible for a reduction on fire insurance. The provisions do not apply to construction projects approved by permit within one year prior to the effective date of this act.
