Massachusetts S1601 amends Chapter 41 to include a new section indemnifying retired police officers and firefighters for medical expenses related to COVID-19 or its variants if contracted as a work-related illness. The indemnification applies to expenses incurred after the bill's acceptance and requires proof of the natural and proximate result of the illness. A panel consisting of the retirement board chairman, city solicitor or town counsel, and a physician selected by the city or town manager and the retiree’s physician must certify the expenses.
