Massachusetts S1328 aims to restrict the use of polystyrene in disposable food containers by food establishments. Effective August 1, 2025, food establishments will be prohibited from dispensing food in polystyrene containers. Retail establishments will also be prohibited from selling polystyrene containers to customers. Food establishments can apply for a hardship exemption if complying with the restriction would cause significant economic hardship. The commissioner will enforce the law through regulations, including fines of up to $1,000 for violations.
