Massachusetts H5292 amends the General Laws to let electric customers choose not to participate in the implementation of advanced metering infrastructure, commonly known as smart meters. Customers can opt out by notifying their distribution company, which must then remove the customer from the implementation plan and inform the relevant department. The distribution company may charge reasonable fees for non-advanced metering service, subject to a uniform statewide rate set by the department.
