Massachusetts H3979 allows the City of Melrose to establish a property tax exemption for senior citizens based on income and asset criteria. To qualify, the applicant must be 65 or older, own and occupy the property as their domicile, and have lived in Melrose for at least 10 years. The exemption amount is 100% of the circuit breaker income tax credit for the previous year. The exemption is subject to approval by the board of assessors and is in addition to any other exemptions. The act takes effect immediately upon passage and will be repealed after three years.
