Maine LD927 enacts a requirement for school administrative units to employ or accept volunteers for chaplains to provide support, services, and programs to students, staff, and parents. The chaplains must be certified, licensed, or ordained by a faith organization recognized by the United States Department of Defense, undergo fingerprinting and a criminal background check, and not be listed on a sex offender registry. They are immune from civil liability for acts and statements made in their role, except for malicious, willful, and deliberate acts intended to cause harm or intimidate.
