Maine LD846 amends hydropower project permit laws to clarify requirements for dam removal.
Maine LD846 amends the laws regulating permits for hydropower projects to clarify requirements for the removal of existing dams. The bill mandates that applicants propose the removal of the entire dam structure, not just a portion. If any part of the dam is on municipal or government land, the applicant must secure approval from the relevant entity. If dam removal will alter water levels, the applicant must identify affected landowners and set aside funds for reimbursing them for property value loss.
