LD749

An Act to Ensure That the Will of the Voters Is Reflected in Interim Appointments of United States Senators

Failed·6/25/25
Tpdf Text

Maine LD749 mandates that interim U.S. Senator appointments reflect the political party affiliation of the vacating senator.

Maine LD749 amends the interim appointment process for U.S. Senators. If the vacating senator was enrolled in a political party at the time of their last election, the interim appointee must have been enrolled in that party at the time of the most recent election, at the time the office was vacated, and at the time of appointment. If the vacating senator was not enrolled in a political party, the interim appointee may not be enrolled in a party at any of these times. This ensures the interim appointment reflects the political alignment of the vacating senator.
