An Act to Remove Barriers to Becoming a Lawyer by Establishing a Law Office Study Program

Failed·6/17/25
Tpdf Text

Establishes a law office study program as an alternative to law school for qualifying to take the Maine bar exam.

This bill creates a law office study program as an alternative to law school for qualifying to take the Maine bar exam. It allows applicants to qualify by completing a systematic course of legal study in a law office under the supervision of a judge or attorney in good standing. The study must be for at least four years and cover subjects tested on the bar exam. The board of bar examiners will review applicants' reports and may grant credit for prior legal study. The board must create forms for applicants to submit required reports and notices by January 1, 2026.
