An Act to Amend the Laws Regarding Smelt Fishing

Failed·3/27/25
Tpdf Text

Allows temporary exceedance of smelt fishing limits if fish are in live containment and excess live fish are released at the water's edge.

This bill amends Maine Revised Statutes to clarify that individuals may temporarily exceed daily bag limits for smelt fishing if the smelt are alive and held in a grader or other live containment device. The bill specifies that after fishing for the day, individuals must measure their catch and release any live smelts that exceed the daily bag limit at the water's edge. This allows for a temporary holding of more fish than the limit during the fishing process.
