Maine LD726 aims to protect municipalities' investment in law enforcement officers by increasing reimbursement rates for training costs.

Maine LD726 amends the reimbursement liability for training costs of full-time law enforcement officers. If a governmental entity hires an officer within five years of their graduation from the Maine Criminal Justice Academy or the Indian police academy at the federal law enforcement training center, the hiring entity must reimburse the original governmental entity for the training costs. The reimbursement rates are adjusted to 160% for the first year, 120% for the second year, 80% for the third year, 40% for the fourth year, and 20% for the fifth year.
