Maine LD640 caps court fees on court-ordered payments at $1,000 and requires the losing party to pay them.
Maine LD640 modifies the law on fees charged by courts for court-ordered payments. It mandates that the losing party pays a 5% fee on the total proceeds, capped at $1,000. This change applies to all funds ordered by the courts to be paid to a person entitled to them. If the funds remain unclaimed for years, the clerk must advertise for weeks in a local newspaper. If no one claims the funds within days after the last publication, the funds become forfeited to the State.
