LD499

Maine LD499 prohibits geoengineering activities to counteract climate change, with exemptions for certain scientific research.

Maine LD499 makes it illegal to engage in, authorize, or fund geoengineering activities, defined as deliberate, large-scale interventions in Earth's natural systems to counteract climate change. This includes carbon dioxide management, solar radiation management, stratospheric aerosol injection, and weather modification techniques. Exemptions apply to scientific research activities conducted in controlled environments by the Department of Environmental Protection, provided they do not involve weather modification or the release of substances into the atmosphere.
