LD251

An Act to Protect the Confidentiality of Information of Individual Customers of a Public Utility

Complete·5/21/25

This bill protects the confidentiality of individual customer information of public utilities in Maine.

This bill modifies the definition of "public records" in the Freedom of Access Act to exclude information pertaining to individual customers of public utilities that is designated as confidential by the Public Utilities Commission. It also specifies that personal information obtained in community well-being check programs can only be shared with first responders as necessary. The bill ensures that certain hazardous materials records remain confidential unless a derailment or discharge poses a threat to public health and safety.
