LD250

Authorizes the Chief Medical Examiner to dispose of identified human remains if no one claims them.

This bill amends the law to allow the Chief Medical Examiner to assume responsibility for the disposal of identified human remains of a deceased resident if no one takes custody after a certain period. The Chief Medical Examiner can inter or cremate the remains and must file a certificate of abandonment in the municipality where the remains were recovered. This change extends the period before the remains are considered abandoned from days to days.
