The bill mandates the Maine Department of Environmental Protection to create and implement a program for collecting and safely disposing of firefighting and fire-suppressing foam containing perfluoroalkyl and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS). The program, to be operational by July 1, 2027, will allow voluntary collection from individuals in Maine. The department can contract with third parties for program administration and adopt necessary rules for its implementation.
