Maine LD2195 prohibits courts from appointing private attorneys to represent indigent individuals without their consent.
Maine LD2195 amends the law to ensure that courts cannot appoint or assign private attorneys to represent individuals eligible for indigent legal services without the attorneys' consent. The Maine Commission on Public Defense Services must determine the attorney's eligibility for such appointments. This change aims to respect the autonomy of private attorneys in deciding whether to take on cases for indigent clients.
