Maine LD212 mandates an evaluation of hydropower dam energy value and exploration of alternative ownership before removal.
Maine LD212 requires applicants seeking to remove a dam part of a hydropower project to provide an evaluation of the dam's energy value and demonstrate efforts to sell the dam. The Department of Environmental Protection or Maine Land Use Planning Commission cannot approve the removal permit without these evaluations and efforts. The bill also allows the department to adopt routine technical rules to implement these requirements.
