LD1842

Establishes stepparent visitation rights in Maine, allowing stepparents to petition for visitation if certain conditions are met.

The bill establishes stepparent visitation rights in Maine, allowing stepparents to petition for visitation if specific conditions are met. These conditions include situations where the child's biological parent is deceased, the child's parent and stepparent are divorced or in the process of seeking a divorce, or if contact with the stepparent is likely to cause substantial harm to the child. The court must consider the best interest of the child, the child's adjustment to their current environment, and the capacity of the parent and stepparent to cooperate in child care.
