LD1806

Establishes a residential rental unit registry in Maine, requiring registration of rental units and prohibiting eviction for nonpayment of rent.

The bill mandates the creation of a residential rental unit registry by the Secretary of State. Owners of residential rental units in Maine must register their units with the Secretary of State, providing specific details about the unit and the owner. The registry will be publicly accessible and searchable. The bill prohibits landlords from serving a notice of termination for nonpayment of rent unless the unit is registered in the state registry and mandates a 120-day waiting period after registration before such notices can be served. Violation of these provisions results in a civil penalty.
