Maine LD1741 regulates the filling of sheriff vacancies and the powers of acting sheriffs.
Maine LD1741 mandates that vacancies in the office of sheriff be filled by the Governor, who must consider recommendations from the county committee of the political party. The acting sheriff, if appointed, must be from the same political party as the sheriff whose term is vacant. The bill also requires county commissioners to provide funds for sheriff office expenses, including office space, and clarifies that sheriffs' decisions to not reappoint deputies are subject to collective bargaining agreement dismissal procedures.
