LD1691

An Act to Expand Access to Justice in Rural Maine by Incentivizing Attorneys to Practice in Underserved Areas

Complete·6/16/25

Maine LD1691 expands access to justice in rural areas by incentivizing attorneys to practice there.

Maine LD1691 establishes the Access to Justice Loan Program and Access to Justice Loan Program Revolving Fund to award loans and enter into loan repayment agreements with eligible Maine residents. The program aims to incentivize attorneys to practice in underserved areas by offering loan forgiveness for those who commit to providing legal services in these areas. The University of Maine System is directed to establish a rural practice track at the University of Maine School of Law to support law students and graduates interested in practicing in underserved areas.
