Maine LD1644 enacts a requirement for the installation of hotbox detectors on all railroad lines in the state that carry passenger trains. These detectors, which use infrared thermal detection systems, must be installed every miles and will monitor and identify overheated axle bearings as wheelsets pass over them. The requirement takes effect beginning January 1, 2027.
